Spraying the aerosol directly into the the filter reduces the challenge concentration.  This error can allow poorly fitting respirators to pass the fit test, which can have consequences for the respirator wearer as well as the employer.  Instead, the aerosol should be directed around the presumed sealing surface of the respirator.
